By Laura Watson

In order for students to learn and have good education, they must be provided with quality teachers. But people often forget that teachers must also be provided with training and preparation for them to efficiently teach their students. Times are changing and teachers should be able to adapt by learning new techniques and ideas for teaching.

Unfortunately, children who are on areas that have low income, with conflicts or in a remote location needs teacher with competence more. School district heads should be able to provide workshops and seminars for these teachers but are conducting them in an ineffective way. So if you are a school district head or someone in charge, here are some guides on improving educators professional development.

You must give them access to great quality development workshops and training to make them feel professionally competent. They might not know how to handle children with various emotional and academic needs that they are teaching. Help them by letting them use instructional practices which produces great results like giving feedback, precision in explanations and formative assessment.

At least focus on 1 or 2 instructional practices which you want them to refine, improve or learn to make them simple. Choose which one you would want them to learn by receiving inputs from your educators. Communicate properly to every level of your organization the instructional practices to be learned and the corresponding expectations.

Ongoing support should be provide to make sure they use the teaching techniques that have been taught to them. Guidance must be given through observation on the way they implement what they have learned in class. Coaching properly is essential and cannot be achieved through simple data collection and monitoring.

Teacher collaboration and peer support should be encouraged as well. This can be done by teachers visiting a classroom that one of them is teaching and giving feedback on the techniques he is using. They must be able to trust and share knowledge with each other.

Recruit and provide them with great trainers that has considerable experience in teaching. You want a trainer who also experienced what he is instructing and not just saying things he has read from a manual. He must practice what he teaches during the training because educators also notices what he does and follow it.

Schedule the development workshops and inform the teachers in advance to give them time to prepare themselves and free their schedules for that day. They also have different responsibilities that needs attention including taking care of their own family. Not announcing this in advance and informing the teachers on the day of training instead will make them think of other things that they should be doing and lose their concentration.

Understanding these things do take a lot of time and changes will not be seen immediately. Avoid changing goals every year by having another instructional practices that you want implemented the following year. They need the support given to continue for a year more to make sure the changes are implemented. Attending seminars a few times a year will not be enough and feedback and follow up should be done because this is an ongoing process. Effective professional development improves your teacher and makes your school better.
