What Should The Occupational Therapy Kits For Children Contain?

By Joshua Kennedy

Occupational therapy kits for children are the most important tool for a practitioner. Given that they work with children of different ages, either pupils or kindergarten kids, they need to have tools and instruments for every type of activity they might need. These are usually pre-planned and ready to be used at each session.

They are not standard, and they can contain whatever the therapist thinks it is necessary. Still, there are some items that are considered must-have and are a great starting point. For example, colored pencils of different colors, erasers, crayons, scotch tape and rubber bands, straws or tissue paper.

Firstly, it is important to know that you can create several occupational therapy kits, each of them with a different theme. For example, have an Easter or Christmas tool kit or create seasonal ones. Then, the tools used will be selected based on the skills you need to work with, such as visual, oral, fine motor, handwriting, dressing, or purpose, such as screening, trail, classroom inclusion and so on.

For starters, make a list of what you need, what is urgent and what can be bought or used later. Some items are super versatile and can be used in a ton of different ways for your activities, and these are the items you need to go for. Also, it is a good idea to get multiple containers and store kits separately and classify the kits by size, use, age, whatever you feel it's the best. Keep in mind that you can also ask a colleague to help if you are unsure about some items in the kit.

Based on your budget you can go to different stores to get your supplies, but most of the things are found in big retails chains. Look for weekly sales or check out the craft sections. Also you can find nice and versatile things at the dollar stores. Make a list of what item you need and buy them as you see a good deal.

Apart from the items mentioned above, the scissors, crayons, glue, the occupational therapy kit can also contain jump ropes for some fun activities, clothespins, which are very versatile, wind-up toys, hole punched pieces and hole puncher, slinky, puffer balls, tennis balls or any type of balls you think are useful for your activities.

Play dough is also a very versatile item that can be used in several activities and can be bought or made at home. A posable figurine is great to use for body awareness or sensory processing. Small or medium beads or small manipulatives are excellent to be used in various activities or in conjunction with other items: for example tongs or bug catchers.

Stickers and strings are always present in therapist's kit for children, given that they come in many shapes and colors and are very fun to use. There are so many items that a therapist uses, and it is almost impossible to get them all from the beginning. Once you learn which ones you need and use most you will get more fun things for your kit.
