The Ideas For A Finished Wood Flooring

By Ruth Schmidt

When considering a new wood floor for your home or place of business, the endless choices of wood flooring is perplexing and overwhelming. With colors, stains, finishes and styles only a small part of the selection process, selecting materials for uniquely finished wood flooring involves conducting hours of research to formulate conclusions based on the information gathered.

The advantage of using engineered antique flooring is that it can be used directly over concrete (because you don't have to nail it during installation), or below grade (because moisture doesn't bother it as much as solid wood). The timber look comes from a thin veneer of the selected timber, which is pressed onto several layers of substrate.

Most homeowners have hardwood floor surface. There are also softwoods, like pine and fir, which are very attractive. These will get nicked up over time, but they're meant to be lived on. The more beat up they get, the better they look - especially if you have a country or antique flavor running through the house. These work especially well as wider planks rather than the 2 1/2" strips.

Structures constructed over 100 years or more were built with the finest timber available during this time era, materials that cannot be purchased at any home improvement or lumber liquidator outlet anywhere for any price. Of such timber, American Chestnut was primarily used and readily available in yesteryears for durability of which has since become "extinct."

Virtually all engineered wood cover is pre-finished, and usually comes with the V grooves mentioned earlier. Some cannot be refinished because that top veneer is too thin. Others can be - once or twice. It depends on the top layer, which can be anything from 1/12" to 1/4" depending on the manufacturer. In the end, this tiling costs about as much as solid surface, and the only advantage (in my opinion) is that you can "float" it on concrete.

Although somewhat more expensive than regular laminated engineered timber surface, reclaimed engineered floor has received positive reviews from individuals that have purchased and installed this "span of history" floor with complete satisfaction and overall strong recommendations. As time passes, advanced technology of today will become antiquated, obsolete and eventually forgotten.

Over the past several years, many manufacturers have included exotic woods in their lines to meet growing popularity. Some of these exotic looks are even available in laminate surface. In solid planking, exotic woods can cost twice as much as comparable domestic species, although engineered timber remain closer to the domestic hardwoods.

The strength and durability of hard wood floors is next to none. If you install a kiln-dried manufactured materials, finished to high standards, it will last for generations to come. Refinished floors will last a lot longer than other types of surface cover like carpet, tile, and vinyl. When other floors begin to look tired and worn down, these floors become more beautiful and valuable as time goes by. Unlike carpeting and vinyl, you can refinish hard wood, and not have to replace when the finish has worn out.
