Reasons For Ventura County Group Counseling

By George Powell

Not everyone enjoys working in groups. It means that you have to open up. You have to learn to work as a team. Some people enjoy a one on one approach. However, when it comes to Ventura County group counseling, you will find that it is a little different that a group at college or work where you are focusing on team building.

One would never had expected that this type of counselling would have taken off a couple of years ago. However, the advantage is that it can help you socialize with other people who you know have the same struggles as you. It could be depression, anxiety, grief, an eating disorder, alcoholism or drug addictions. This is a unique time to discover more about other people in the group.

You will become more compassionate about those in the group and they will also develop the same type of compassion for you. As this grows, you will feel as if you are in a safe environment, and this encourages you to share your story. Groups like these are found in hospitals, clinics, rehabs or privately.

Many people go on to develop unique relationships which is very important because one needs to have this type of support at any time. It is different from the therapist who is only available once a week. They will have their boundaries. Often, you won't be allowed to contact the therapist during the week or outside of the sessions.

During this time, there will be various things that members will do. The therapist will have methods which be most effective, depending on what they are suffering from. Sometimes, a person needs to tell the other members what goals they have achieved. Some people will need to tell the group where they need to improve. Role play can be included. Many people just enjoy talking with one another.

The therapist will encourage quieter members to open up. However, he or she won't force them to talk. Often, over time they will begin to share. They are encouraged by the other members who share their side of the story. Compassion will develop, and this is sometimes the way in which the introverted folks begin to share their stories.

They will connect with others because they will feel the same way when someone expresses him or herself. They will feel that this sense of identity brings them closer together. The relationship strengthens and often they feel that the support will lead to additional backup outside of the group. It is more of an informal type of support that they can look forward to.

Groups are also a good way in which one can get out and socialize. Sometimes, a person with depression or those individuals who are bereaved will feel that they are more isolated. They won't feel like going out. This can be the first step. They don't have to put up a front because they will be in the same place as everyone else.
