Making Holes Using Glasswork Drilling Jig

By Catherine Burns

Time and again one would want to reuse some materials for various needs. It could also be in an attempt to try and combine various them to come up with a unique product. An example of such material is a lead crystal. The discussion below explains the process of making holes using glasswork drilling jig, a tool used to make penetrations in a glass that allows boring.

There are various kinds of glass crystals in existence in the present times. They differ in thickness, durability strength depending on the purpose they are made for. The main factor considered when trying to hole these surfaces is the size of penetrations aimed at. This will dictate the tools to be used. Preferable bits and ball burrs made of diamond are recommended for the task.

Some of the main tools employed for the job include the ball burrs and the bits. These are used together and supplement each other. The burr will start to make a turf that the bit will hold onto and bore further. They are available in different diameters. The burr will make a mark that will prevent the relevant bit from skidding away from the spot when the operation is ongoing.

Others are a tray or a plan. This is a flat surfaced pan like container aimed at holding the liquid to be used as lubrication during the boring process. It will hold the object being worked on as well as the fluid chosen for the task. A wooden board is needed to help in preventing one from accidentally penetrating through the bottom of pan or tray.

Directions for the process are as follows. The first step is to put the object to be worked on in the tray or pan. Fill the pan with water or any recommended fluid for the just to the point where it covers the object. Place a wooden board or Styrofoam material at the bottom of the pan to prevent you from boring its bottom.

The object is first dug with a ball burr to make a divot that would be holding the drill tool end. Then go on to switch the burr with a bit of similar diameter. Important to note is that the bit should not be twisted. Equally, it should be of the right diameter. In case you want to drill big holes, make small ones first then go on to use the next bigger bits and burr to you get to your desire.

It is very crucial to keep lubricating the surface as you continue with the work. In case you are not using running water, make small pauses to clean off the surfaces the particle dug from the surface of the object. Use clean water to do that. Do not allow the particles to accumulate and form a paste or rather make the process harder.

Ideally, make a move to ensure that you are digging slowly at a slower pace. Apply a little pressure and keep on accelerating when you determine the boring is more smooth and comfortable. Speedy working will wear the tips fast and thus lowers service span.
