A fairly young breed born of the mix between a Labrador and a poodle, this dog first saw light in 1988. Relatively speaking it is a young breed of sorts in the breeding world. Thus due to this, it still has to be decided if it merits its own status as a breed.

As regards the parent lines of this breed, this dog is the product of two working dog lines. The poodle was bred for herding and guarding purposes on farms while Labradors were trained for boat duty in terms of retrieving tackle and supplies that fell overboard. Both these lines were later on bred for sporting purposes, but there have been mixed reactions from the breeding community regarding this.

Uniformity of behavior across time for all dogs of this breed is hard to establish, as this is a fairly young breed still. They are however, in possession of a very enthusiastic personality and are always eager to please their masters. On top of this, they are also very energetic and will require quite a bit of leg room to move around in.

As with any pet or breed, regular visits to the vet is something that will be required for health and maintenance reasons. During its younger years do not expect too many complications as this is a fairly robust breed. When it ages, however, be on the lookout for joint and hip ailments which will be more regular as age progresses.

Once you do decide on getting a puppy of this breed, you will end up with either two kinds of coats or fur. This will be either a wavy wool coat that is thicker, or a thinner and less wavy fleece coat. The wavy wool coat will need more in terms of maintenance and will need to be groomed regularly. For the fleece type of wool, regular brushing is on the agenda as it is prone to matting and tangling.

As this breed is one that is created from working type dogs, it will need a lot of protein in its diet as can be derived from sources such as chicken. Also be aware of foods that it cannot eat such as chocolates, grapes and cherries. You can also ask your vet alternate sources of proteins such as from grains and plants that your dog can avail of.
