Huntington Beach Family Therapy Can Help To Heal Dysfunctional Families

By Cynthia Ross

Modern families are under great pressure. In most cases, both parents are pursuing their own careers and they have to cope with many demands on their time. Families do not spend enough time with each other and many children keenly feel the lack of support and nurturing that they so desperately need. As a consequence, they sometimes develop behavior problems. Huntington Beach family therapy can help such families to bring balance to their lives.

The divorce rate is at an all time high and it is especially contested divorces that can tear families asunder. It most cases it is the children that suffer most and they often develop feelings of guilt because they think that they are the cause of the divorce. Such families can definitely benefit from counseling. The children need to understand that they still have a father and a mother and that they are loved.

Children are also experience high levels of stress. They are expected to do well at everything and they are often subjected to tremendous peer pressure. Busy parents are often not aware of the fact that their children are unhappy and that they struggle to cope with all the demands made of them. Such children are in danger of becoming adrift. A therapist can be extremely useful in helping families to become more supportive and in tune with the needs of each other.

Substance abuse and addiction is probably the main cause of unhappy and dysfunctional families. Sadly, addicts and substance abusers are often aggressive and they routinely abuse their families emotionally, sexually and physically. If the guilty partner, and it can be either a child or a parent, agrees to get help the whole family still needs help to recover from the abuse. A therapist can be of great help in such cases.

Therapists often find it difficult to council entire families. If only one member is unwilling to be part of the process, nobody can make progress. Therapists will therefore often have one on one sessions with every member of the family before they start seeing them as a group. Every member must understand that he has a vital role to play in helping to ensure the happiness and stability of the whole family.

Families may need some help to find a therapist that has experience in dealing with other families with similar problems. General practitioners, social workers and even church ministers may be able to recommend a suitable professional. Therapists themselves will also refer families to someone better suited than then to deal with the issues at hand if they do not feel qualified to accept the case.

No therapist can solve the problems experienced by families. Only the members of those families can do this. The role of the therapist is not to prescribe solutions, but to rather help his clients to find solutions for themselves. Families need to understand that it may take some time and many sessions with the therapist before positive results can be expected. There are no quick fixes.

Families are the cornerstone of any healthy society. When families become dysfunctional, the entire society suffers. Therapists can certainly help families in trouble to find real solutions and to become mutually supporting, loving and happy once more.
