Codependency is very common. People will often see a spouse as being very controlling or protective. They may just accept this. However, it is not healthy living in this way. Often, it can lead to divorce. It is important to realize and to look into codependency counseling CO before it can become even worse.

However, there are times when it can seem that there is an element of control. When this begins to take over one's life, it is necessary to talk about it. Therapists are equipped with the skills to deal with this type of a relationship. Generally, there is a background which leads to the the situation. For example, it can be an adult who has grown up in dysfunctional environment. Abuse can lead to people wanting to be in control and pleasing others.

Obviously they think they are protecting their family members. However, they don't realize that children that they have a relationship with, for example should become independent from a young age. They need to develop relationships with other children. It is important for them to learn from their mistakes and to explore the world.

A person in this situation wants to make sure that the child doesn't come into any situation where they will face challenges. However, ultimately, everyone is going to struggle with hardships and speed bumps somewhere in their lives. Learning out in the real world is the best place to start. Often, this goes back to one's childhood when they were not protected. They feel that they have to give back. However, it is not intentional.

While the individual feels as if they are caring for those that they love, they actually are doing more damage because folk don't like to be controlled. This will put a lot of strain on the relationship. It especially relates to the children and the fact that the adult doesn't want to let go.

The more they help others, and neglect themselves, the easier it is to forget previous experiences. Their self esteem and level of confidence improves as they are praised by those around them. It almost becomes an obsession, but they don't realize how much damage they are doing to themselves and their family and friends.

A person who is codependent also displays signs that they lack self esteem and this comes out in the way in which they are always looking for praise. They find that this is the way in which they are accepted. A person who is helpful and useful will obviously be given praise and begin to feel uplifted, making them feel worthy. This is often what motivates to continue to act in this way.

It is important that other members of the family watch out for a person who seems to have got to the point where they are obsessed with a particular person. Usually, they will have a low self esteem. They are ashamed of themselves. They also don't have good boundaries. This is very common. Their first thought is to help another person. They won't say no, and therefore they will be neglecting their own needs.
