By Dorothy Cooper

In the past, there were a number of different types of writers. Now, there are a number of writers whom work in different areas. In some cases, a freelance travel writer might self-publish a blog. Whereas, there are still those working as professionals whom go on journeys, write about various experiences and get paid for sharing the information in various publications.

In most cases, these individuals rarely get paid up front. For, publications are weary of people whom will take advantage of advance pay when taking trips whether for business or pleasure. Whereas, most also have to search far and wide to find publications accepting work of this nature. As such, while this type of writing can be fun, it can often be difficult to break into the genre as a professional earning a salary.

With the onset of the internet, there are fewer jobs available when it comes to professionals working in this area. For, the blog world is overloaded with people owning and blogging to sites in this regard. As such, readers are starting to turn to the internet for information related to vacation planning and travel and less to traditional magazines, newspapers and publications like Time, Newsweek, Outdoor World and Reader's Digest.

Before the onset of the internet, cable and satellite, freelance writers in this area were only able to publish articles in magazines and newspapers. Now, with cable and satellite companies having publications and travel related channels, there are many more opportunities for these individuals. While this is the case, most publications do require writers to carry a subscription of the publications for which one writes.

Whatever type of publication an individual decides to write for, be it a blog, or a professional journal, there are some important steps when promoting oneself as a freelance writer. For, even when it comes to publications accepting work, competition can often be fierce. As such, when guidelines allow, most freelance writers submit work to several publications and websites at the same time.

When beginning, it is important to start small. For example, there are a number of writing websites which invite individuals to write about travel experiences. In most cases, the sites do not pay though provide an outlet to create experience in this type of writing. Whereas, there are a few which work on a point based system, and will offer gift cards or other bonuses based on the amount, and quality of work one contributes to the site.

While providing work to these sites, the individual can also build a professional portfolio, become familiar with writing guidelines and perfect pitch, style and tone. In addition, the individual will most likely work with editors and staff. In doing so, these volunteer writing jobs can often be good networking tools for finding paying jobs in the future. Whereas, editors and staff can often provide references when applying to those jobs.

Whether writing in the travel genre or other areas, one of the most important aspects is to know the audience. In addition, those whom write from the perspective of the audience are often some of the most successful authors and writers. For, when one can do so, it is often easier to garner the interest and attention of those reading the work.
